--- Comment #1 from V Stuart Foote <[email protected]> ---
LibreOffice does not work with a line model. If you want to work line by
line--each line must be in its own paragraph. And each paragraph will display
its own formatting on the ruler.

Please realize that paragraph content is text that may render as multiple lines
on screen, wrapping between margins and modified by indentation from margins.
Toggle the formatting marks visible (<Ctrl>+<F10>) to expose the Pilcrow ΒΆ
markings of the paragraph bounds.

You can use the 'Paragraph indent' button actions (.uno:IncrementIndent,
.uno:DecrementIndent).

You can also use the Ruler UI Widget and grab-n-drag the lower triangle to
position the indents, starting or ending.

Finally you can avoid Direct Formatting of indentation, and create or modify a
Paragraph style, and set indentation and spacing for *All* paragraphs assigned
that style. The Ruler will reflect those style settings when a paragraph has
edit cursor focus.
