            Bug ID: 171942
Summary: Avoid menu entry icons for menu entries that can be
                    (de)selected
           Product: LibreOffice
           Version: unspecified
          Hardware: All
                OS: All
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: medium
         Component: UI
          Assignee: [email protected]
          Reporter: [email protected]

Description:
TL;DR: Suggestion to avoid menu entry icons for menu entries that can be
(de)selected, since it prevents the use of more expressive selection indicators
and reduces visual clutter.

Many menu items to do open a dialog or execute a command but (un)set an option.
If they are selected, they are usually prefixed by a ✔ (if it is a yes/no
option) or a • (if it is the selected entry of a single-select list). However,
if the menu entry has an icon, selection for either type is indicated only by
highlighting the icon (e.g. with a blue frame).
This means that selection for icons is on one hand less expressive and that the
use of icons introduces an additional, different looking indicator of
selection, leading to a need to remember both and generating visual clutter.

A simple start could be the "view" menus of our applications, which have a lot
of selectable entries.

The suggested guideline could be added to
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Design/Guidelines/MenuBar

Steps to Reproduce:
Open the view menu of Writer

Actual Results:
A most entries are selectable, some use icon/highlighted icon, some use
checkmarks.

Expected Results:
Selectable menu entries ideally should have standard indicators of selection in
front of them, ✔ (if it is a yes/no option) or a • (if it is the selected entry
of a single-select list)

Reproducible: Always
