I have backed up and deleted the old user profile and it seems to have done the
trick.

I have restored it and deleted the Zotero extension. It seems to be working
fine so I guess it was the Zotero extension (which was not fully supported if I
remember correctly) that was behind all of that.

I'll leave it open a bit to be sure, but I'll close the bug report after a few
days of normal use.
