You can do some further debugging by checking Tools - Options - Advanced - Open
Expert Configuration and then search for 'RecoveryList'. The TempURL is the
pointer to the ODF file that would be recovered from your backup folder. (You
need to check this BEFORE killing LO because after recovery this information
will be cleared out.)

As long as the file/path that TempURL points to exists, then it ought to be
recovered on startup. (I just verified it works in Linux.) Note that each time
it saves, it alternates file names (Untitled_001.odt <-> Untitled_002.odt).
