Changing direction is not different than many other actions that you could perform after introducing content to the cell. For the most part, once you have introduced content in the cell, the content is kept as it was introduced, with additional _immediate_ automatic parsing in some cases. Modifying conditions (including direction) after the content was introduced does not change the content of the cell.
