Learning how this feature works in Calc takes a very basic trial and error, one time (or alternatively, actually learning how it works). From that point on, the user knows how it works and can use it with no issues. Changing the way the Freeze feature has been working in Calc in past versions is not innocuous; it has negative consequences. To be clear, the current result / behavior when selecting a column is consistent with the behavior when the Freeze is triggered on a single cell, or a whole row. The selected area (i.e. cell, row, or column) is the new "home" of the movable area. AFAIR, other worksheet tools work in the same way.
