When you get very long strings in table cells. This happens when people write tables with things like agenda items, and have a "comments" column, which can have several long paragraphs. The cell (and sometimes the screen) is not big enough to show you the whole comment, and then, if you're not careful, you might perform a replacement in places you actually shouldn't. And if you can have the selection, there is no good reason to disable the checkbox.
