Bug ID: 173470
Summary: The recent change in the "show changes" function in
Writer makes it useless for literary editing
Product: LibreOffice
Version: 24.2.7.2 release
Hardware: Other
OS: Linux (All)
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: medium
Component: Writer
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Description:
The recent change in the "show changes" function in Writer makes it useless for
literary editing because if the author can not see the FULL deletion and
insertion made by the editor, it interferes with the communication between
them. This may not be necessary in the business world but it it is absolutely
necessary in the literary world. If the full deletion is not shown in the
edited manuscript the author must have the original manuscript in front of him
as a separate document. This becomes very awkward and time consuming. Instead
of deletions shown in the context of the manuscript, the author now sees only a
few letters of the first deletion in microtype in the left margin. And heaven
forbid that there is more than one change within a single line, the second
deletion can not be seen at all. While having the changed copy able to be read
without a break in the continuity might be acceptable in the business world,
the interaction between author and editor in a literary context is much more
interactive. This change seriously interferes with that necessary
communication.
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Open document in Writer
2.Turn on "show changes" under "Edit"
3.Make changes - disaster is right in front of you.
Actual Results:
See "Steps to Reproduce"
Expected Results:
Same disaster as the first and subsequent times.
Reproducible: Always
User Profile Reset: No
Additional Info:
Solution is to reverse this change and release a corrected version.
