Bug ID: 174068
Summary: keystrokes are processed out off order
Product: LibreOffice
Version: 26.8.1.1 release
Hardware: x86-64 (AMD64)
OS: Linux (All)
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: medium
Component: Writer
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
It often happens that text is distorted because letters are swapped. For
example, I type “ein” and it comes out as “eni,” “ein,” or some other
permutation of the characters. Or, for example, “leigen” instead of “liegen.”
This happens especially with key sequences that are close together or with key
sequences that alternate between the right and left hands and that I can
therefore type particularly quickly. Of course, I sometimes mix up letter
sequences myself. But today it happened to me several times that I typed the
word “der” repeatedly in quick succession and it sometimes came out wrong.
During these attempts, I was certain that the keystrokes came in the correct
sequence, one after another.
When processing keyboard input, there are naturally many stages where something
like this can go wrong, especially at the operating system level, long before
LibreOffice comes into play. But I also see that LibreOffice has concurrent
processes— which is why there also is a chance there things might be processed
in an overlapped or mixed order. If coding changes have recently been applied
on concurrent processes of LibreOffice, their priorities and interlocking or
locking or uninterruptible code sections, this should be reexamined with regard
to “overlap”! In the past, I seldom saw such issues and, above all, I
attributed them to my own typing errors.
When these issues occurred in LibreOffice, I also opened a Mousepad session and
tested the same rapid keystrokes there: The problem did not occur during those
tests.
Of course problems of this sort can not easily be transferred in a reproducible
way, since timing and typing speed are involved. Of course they also depend on
other CPU load in the computer. When I faced these problems, I saw no close to
the limit CPU loads and also memory usage was far from “full”. On my Linux
system, I have meters showing both of them which I always look at first, if
something of this kind happens.
