Hello Tim, *,
I have tested it with MariaDB 5.5.33+maria-1~wheezy (from MariaDB's repo), s
parallel installed LibreOffice Version: 4.2.0.0.alpha1 Build ID:
c2b9ad37f8a8de9c7dbdd76c86aecf6388107056 (with installed Germanophone lang- as
well as helppack), mysql-connector-java-5.1.26 and Java
<quote>
java version "1.8.0-ea"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0-ea-b113)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.0-b55, mixed mode)
</quote>
from Oracle under Debian Testing AMD64. I cannot confirm it either, sorry ...
:(

To reproduce your bug, I have
0. dropped all tables in my test DB before, so they will not disturb with my
further testing ... ;)
1. opened LO
2. file menu "New – Database"
3. in the Database Wizard, I changed "Create a new database" to "Connect to
existing database", and chose "MySQL" there.
4. In the next dialogue I chose "Connect using JDBC (Java Database
Connectivity).
5. Then I chose the adequate "Database name" (in my case "test"). on "Server /
Port" "localhost", clicked next.
6. In the following dialogue I entered my "User name", which I am using to
connect to MariaDB, and clicked on "Test Connection".
7. Then, in the next dialogue, I just clicked on "Finished".
8. In the "Save as" dialogue I chose the name and the path for the ODB file.
9. When Base opened the document, I clicked on "Tables" and "Create Table in
Design View".
10. Entered "Sign" in the first "Field Name" and "Description" in the second
one.
11. Pressed <Ctrl>+<S> to save the table.
12. Chose a table name for it.
13. In the following dialogue about the primary key, I simply clicked "Enter"
14. Closed the "Table Design" dialogue
15. Opened the created table
16. C&P your "♯" from your first comment in the column "Sign" and entered a
short description in "Description" and their adequate ID number.
17. C&P your inserted "♭" in the next line
18. Closed the table and reopened it again

Both signs are still visible as I have inserted them.

If I now open mysql from commandline, "connect $db_name" and use "select * from
$table_name" both symbols are there visible, too ... ;)

The only thing, what I cannot test here, is, if it would be different using a
network, as I have no network here, sorry ... :( My MariaDB server is running
on the same machine as its client ... ;)

Just out of interest: in comment 7 you mentioned, that you share your database
over your network. Does it mean, that your MariaDB server is running on a
separate machine? Or is the same PC, with which you found this bug? And maybe
it would be useful to start LO from command line to see, it it spits out any
warnings and/or error messages, when it tries to connect to MariaDB ... ;)

Sorry for this long text and have a nice afternoon
Thomas.
