I can't tell whether the data I enter is text or number except by looking at the current cell format, which is number. If I type a number into such a cell, I would expect it to be interpreted as a number. Nor do I see any way of changing the data type except by changing the cell format. Your suggestion of using Menu/Data/Text to columns doesn't do anything. Only the Separator and Fields options are enabled. 'Detect special numbers' is ticked but disabled. The column type is Standard and if, following the help, I change this to US English (which would seem irrelevant as I'm not in the US) nothing alters. More fundamentally, however, I can open the original spreadsheet in version 3.6.2.2 and all the cells are interpreted correctly with no errors.
