I think the problem is whenever I upgrade there are slight changes to reading the ODF files. So the work around I use is that whenever I want to open up an old file to edit it for a new purpose. I do not open up the file, I create a new file and use the 'Insert' -> 'File...' from the menu bar. As far as a fix, I think the ODF import function should check to see if any media files are not being used before purging them. If you recall the ODF file is a zip file with the media files inside.
