Hence the last sentence in that paragraph: "Truth is stranger than fiction." Consequently, the first place to look for the cause of the bug is what could have possibly changed during the events: opening file via jump list caused hard LO Calc crashes, followed immediately by loading the same file using the Recents menu (successful), followed immediately by saving the file with another name, followed immediately by performing the same action that caused the crash.
