That seems to be it. I didn't realize a wrong font could cause that. I don't see the names of the font in italics but highlighting the jumbled type and changing it to "courier new" makes everything OK. I set up a font substitution and now things are being opened correctly. Don't know why this wasn't a problem with Open office or WORD but they must have a default substitution. Might be a good idea to have libre office also make it a default substitution of courier new for courier.
