LibreOffice Writer has Insert->Special Character as one way to add accents to
letters.

Another way is to learn the codes for utf-8 encoding and use the special key
sequence to insert those codes which make the accented characters.

For example, to make acute accent e (é) hold down the Ctrl+Shift+U and while
holding them down type the four digits 00e9.

(When using a browser to do the same thing, you can release the Ctrl+Shift+U
before tapping the code.)

The third way is more complex and depends on getting the Compose/Meta key set
to work as it does in Windows. The details will depend on your distribution's 
system settings. However, once the compose/meta key is set, hold down the
compose/meta key and tap the apostrophe followed by the letter e to make the
accented letter (é).

Other accents have other codes, of course.
