@Frank : without the file, it is going to be difficult to reproduce unless you
can pinpoint exactly how many highlight operations are required to trigger the
bug, or whether it also depends on text length, document size, or the present
of other attributes, e.g. tables, headers, footers, etc.
As posting the file here would make it public, perhaps that is not the best
thing to do, as you say.
I don't suppose you could replace the text in your document with "lorem ipsum"
produced input (there's an extension for LO for that) and then try and
reproduce to narrow down the problem ?
There is a parallel between what you describe with the highlighting attribute
and what people seem to have experienced using the revision tool, whereby after
a certain number of revisions (visible in the margin), LO stops responding or
performance takes a massive hit.
