Turns out may have been a hardware failure. In exponentially rapid succession
several other subsystems failed (including eventually X itself).
I cut my losses, scavenged the disk for the few files that might be precious
and not in my normal backup set, and reloaded from a DVD.
Problem now not reproduceable. :-)
