Yes. The recommended way to upgrade Ubuntu is to copy your important files
(=your work) to some USB stick or hard drive, install the new version to your
computer (wiping everything) and finally copy your important files back to the
new system.
It is possible to upgrade Ubuntu "in place", but there is a danger of having a
somehow broken system. It is true that some people do it this way.
In both cases you must have backups of your work (like you should have at all
times anyway).
