It took me a long way to come there but this bug is not a problem for me any
more as I now can reproduce and repair it with a few key strokes or clicks of
the mouse (see my answers in comment #10).
I do not know if this problem is related to the contents of my profile or if
this is a trap for other users who do not know the trick.
Note: I observed the sidebar disappear only when I tried to make it visible in
undocked state to show styles. When I tried to show the gallery the dialogue
remains on screen as expected. I was not aware of all these UI discussions.
