I have exactly the same behavior with Version 3.5.6.2:

1. Brand new installation (Windows, German) + Built in Help (Win7, 4 GB RAM)
2. Start LibreOffice
3. In Main Window open existing Database-File
   OR
   Start Writer with new File and then open exiting Database-File
   OR
   Create new Database with Wizard, save File and automaticaly open the new
Database
4. Base opens (you can see the start screen of Base) and crashes at once
("search for solution" ...)

There is no crash, as described by Simon, when an existing Writer-File is
already open.
