Additional data:

> Was it saved as .docx or .odt from Word 2012?

It was always a .docx file. If it's significant, I can confirm that we have
Word 2010, not 2012.

Unfortunately, no. I did add several footnotes intermixed with the original
footnotes in the document, but I don't have a step-by-step recipe for you. I
made a fairly long series of edits, saved the file, and then went to reopen it
the next day, only to find it in a corrupted state. I don't have intermediate
copies of the file as far as I know.

I can tell you that the file was originally emailed to me; it may be that there
is a permissions problem related to Windows settings on documents sent via
email. But LibreOffice provided no feedback that the document was
write-protected or otherwise unable to be saved.

I hope this additional information is useful.
