sorry but I've never fully understood what Caolan meant (that's because I have
no proper code knowledge).
even if that was not a "traditional regression" it seems if was that committ
that caused the performance drop from 5.3.x to 6.0.x
then another, even worse, performance regression happened between 6.1.x and
6.2.x but Noel just fixed it.
I hope another commit will restore the nice performance of 5.3.x as well.
