Cool. Just need one point of clarification, which I asked about before.

"topmost" means sequential position in the document.
And this is the same as what you called "start of active chunk" in comment 44.
That is, "topmost" = "start of" and this has has nothing to do with the
direction in which the mouse was dragged in making the selection of the chunk.
Otherwise, I think I understand how to explain the different
cases/techniques/situations that I have generated here.
