I knew that there is the option to change it and though I had done it before for a different installation, I could not find it on the spot. "simply check it enabled" is a relative statement and holds only if you know about the software, which users often don't after a fresh installation. May I suggest to rethink the initial layout? The same holds for the text toolbar. There was probably a reason why it was chosen to be different than other presentation software, but for me it seems like a major obstacle to use Impress out-of-the-box.
