Alternate workaround is to use the notation:

x {"+"} y

...instead of the usual:

x + y

Also, minor point regarding the version of the OpenSymbol font. The statement
"The reported versions of the old/new ttf are the same (102.2) but the size is
different" in comment #5 does not appear to be correct. The old version of
OpenSymbol shipped with LO v3.3.0.4 was v2.4.3 (c) 2010 Oracle. This is also
the version provided in the link, whereas the current is v102.2 (c) 2009 Sun /
(c) 2011 Julien Nabet / Olivier Hallot, and has been so since at least v3.5.x.
