I'm not sure what python can easily fix. It seems difficult, basically the principle would be to look at the tables: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS_Roman and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS_Cyrillic_encoding. For example, if in the original file, we have the character 0x80, normally it should be converted to А ( but here we get a Ä ), ...
