After I had entered the email address into a cell (which was formatted as a hyperlink in blue and underlined) I completed data entry in other cells. I then went back to the offending cell by clicking it and used Ctrl+M to Clear Direct Formatting. However, for some strange reason the text in the cell remained underlined and in blue. This is what led me to believe that the 'Clear Direct Formatting' was not working hence my bug report. I then re-formatted the text from blue to black and removed the underlining which produced the result I required. I then followed the Tools>Auto Correct Options and un-clicked the 'URL Recognition' box and all is now good. Very many thanks for the advice given.
