Many characters I regularly insert via ALT+numbercode are not handled by your
method:

ALT+175 = »
ALT+184 = ©
ALT+241 = ±
ALT+243 = ¾
ALT+246 = ÷
ALT+251 = ¹
ALT+252 = ³
ALT+253 = ²
