Important note: I'm not a lawyer. Trademarks aren't a problem, the problem comes from the trademark *policy*. As an example, we have Mozilla's which limits or forbids selling copies of the original software (the trademark policy given as example might also have other problems that I'm unaware of).
Although I don't know what you mean by "releasing the trademark under the GPL". Perhaps there are lawyers that might be able to help.
