I do would like to note that the solution I gave might not be intended to private conversations. XMPP is *way* better for that, but it's not a social network, but a chat instead.
I love using XMPP for most of my small groups, but it may not always suit if you have many topics happening, etc. For that probably a private discourse server would be a better fit?
