As a member of the free software evaluation project team from the Free
Software Directory[1], I can say that at least Riot and Element
*standalone* versions were found to be non-free software, despite their
license[2][3]. As of June 19th, 2020‎[4], this no longer affects
Riot-web[5][6].

Since the Free Software Directory Backlog project team[7] feared search
engine optimization (SEO) abuse as result of the possible marketing
strategy of the name change, the FSD has prevented indexing of some
pages related to the name.

As a side note, the choice of which free/libre software digital instant
messaging to *foster to the general public* is now a very delicate
subject, particularly due to the failure of integration of new entrants
(digital instant messaging self-proclaimed “standards”) with long
standing officially registered standards, such as XMPP and its official
extensions (XEPs). I have made some preliminary study on this subject,
although fostering XMPP[8].

In the field of digital social networks with no real-time presence, the
free/libre software community is doing well on embracing the ActivityPub
standard, despite the recent drop of support for OStatus due to dormancy
as draft[9] and some alleged lack of security[10], which unfortunately
led to many ActivityPub implementations dropping all connections to GNU
Social, this one which does have a task open for ActivityPub
implementation[11].
