David,

I see your point, but:

I have three hard disks available - one with a working (all the goodies(!)) 
w98 from rob, a working w95/linux from me, and a clean disk with just dos 
and the w95 cabs.

The problem is that most of the time the system simply will not boot...if I 
could get it to boot I could be deep and dirty at register level - that's 
not a problem to me - and try and see what's happening. But if the damn 
thing won't even boot past spinning the disk up, there's not a lot I can do.

Grrr.
