I use Jeppeson/Mentor FliteMap for flight planning and execution. I feed
GPS signals from a Rockwell NavCardLP plugged into the side. The screen is
readable enough to follow the flight path except in very bright light
directly on the screen. Usually, though, I can find a place in the front
passenger's seat (or lap) to place the Lib for good viewing. I just got a
clamp bracket, but haven't installed it in the airplane yet.
I enjoy "flying the line" and only setting the NAVs by what the software
tells me to do, just in case. By flight planning first, I am already
avoiding airspace I don't care to enter, but they show up just fine as red
lines on the moving map.
You didn't mention it, but you need to watch out that your GPS receiver
doesn't quit relaying data to your PC at speeds above 99kt. This is a
limitation programmed into many GPS receivers that are not TSOd to limit the
liability of the manufacturer.
For driving in the US, I like Delorme's StreetAtlas program, which I use
with an ETAK PCMCIA GPS card. For driving in Japan, I prefer MapFan II,
which is the Japanese version of the Sony ETAK software that is available in
the US (and is only compatible with their own GPS receiver).
I am interested to learn what software people in other parts of the world
use for driving.
