Subject: My plan for a L100 reload of Win 98
I had a previous post as a new user with my new Libretto 100ct that I
wanted to reload Win 98 with a fresh version that I had the CD for. (No
CD or cab files came with the Libretto.) Finally after a broken FDD was
replaced, I'm ready
The Libretto CD-ROM is a PCMCIA version that I don't think will work in
DOS. I can't find the DOS drivers or other stuff necessary.
I have a "startup disc" that is verified to work and read the FDD. I
made it with my Dell which has the same OS I want on the Libretto.
(Thanks ·TechnoDragon· for that Tip) The "companion disc" that I got
from the Libretto "Master Disc Creator" boots up ok also. (I did make
all other discs--accessories, utilities, sound, mouse, and two display
(why 2?) discs under the Libretto Disc Creator.)
I downloaded a disc with the CD-ROM drivers for my PCMCIA unit.
I have also downloaded a bunch of files from the Toshiba site for the
device drivers plus some other things. I don't know which ones should
really be used. I guess when I get to that point I will try stuff until
it works
My plan:
1. While everything is working on the Libretto I will copy the Win98
folder from MY CD to the Libretto HDD in to a new folder called "Win98".
(No sub-folders, but I am not sure about the "Drivers" and
"Pws" sub-folders--any advise?)
2. On my Libretto in the current Win98 version I will delete and
uninstall all the programs, files and folders that I can.
3. Reboot the Libretto with My startup disc and hopefully used "deltree"
to wipe out everything but "win98" folder.
4. Type: "C:\WIN98\SETUP" and hope for the best. ( I will probably
test this before I do step 2&3 just to be sure that the start up of MY
win98 works.)
5. Then if My win98 installs, i will update drivers as necessary from
the pile of discs that I have there waiting to use.
6. If all really goes well and I think I have accomplished my goal, I
will post to this mail list that I did it and will gladly help anyone
else through such a situation.
I will probably also load 98lite30 into the Win98 folder since I
don't want that MSIE stuff on my Libretto. I use NETSCAPE. Any
comments on the latest version of 98Lite?
Have I overlooked anything or am I doing it the hard way, comments?
Thanks for all the responses to my previous post.
Jim
