Many of the basic units had no output capability, and the one's that had where quite bulky and 'twice the price'. When I saw the eTrex, which had just been released in the UK, I could not believe how compact it was, with output capability, and a cheap price compared to other units. In fact when I bought it (on the spot !) I was sure it had been incorrectly priced and should have been twice the price. I payed 109 pounds sterling from Stanstead Airport Dixons. Unfortunately back in January, I could not buy any interface cables for Garmin UK had not received any from the US with the unit being so new. Six months latter the cables are now readily available in the UK, and I have the dual cable that plugs into my cars cigar lighter socket, and the RS232 plug for the 50CT. As far as the libretto is concerned, the GPS could be anybodies, as long as it receives the NMEA signals for the software mapping. The eTrex unit on its own I use it on various occasions. 1. Locating my car when parking in an unfamiliar city.(mainly when on business abroad) 2. Using the track-back feature when travelling to an unfamiliar destination. When returning home, it solves the question of "should I turn left or right at this junction ?" 3. Skiing in winter in case of 'white outs'. 4. Out on the mountain bike as a speedo and trip counter. For me the more complicated units with built in maps are okay, but the detail is lacking compared to when hooked up to the libretto, and of course they are more than double the price of the eTrex. And of course, the eTrex has a high 'gadget factor' that compements the Libretto perfectly !!!
