Subject: Libretto 50, Bios 6.50 and large HDD
G'day Folks,
I'm new to this list so I apologise if this question has
been answered 6M times already, but since there no longer seems to
be a way to search the archived list ...
I'm having a devil of a time trying to get a bigger HD to
work with my Libretto 50. I wonder if anybody can help?
Here are the symptoms:
I (carefully)insert a brand new 9.5mm high 5GB HD (IBM Travelstar20GN)
into the Libretto by loosening the screws on the back of the case.
I boot from a floppy, fdisk and format /s. Then I try to reboot from
the hard disk which always fails. It variously either just hangs after
the power-on start tests or alternatively prints the following on the
screen:
This BASIC was aborted, because this machine has no rom BASIC.
Use Toshiba's BASIC
I'm told by a friend that this is not uncommon with many machines, and
is an overhang of the old DOS days. It usually indicates that the bios
has not detected the hard disk.
The bios is 6.50, and when you do the <esc> on power-up and the hit
<F1> to get to the bios screen there are two choices for the hard
disk setup, "Enhanced IDE (Normal)" or "Standard IDE". Unfortunately
neither choice apears to make a difference.
The hard disk itself works fine. I can get it to work in my other PC
no worries.
If anybody has a clue - I'd really appreciate it.
Westin
