There should be no problems since it is only Windows 98 SE2 in disguise (in
other words, how does Microsoft take your money? Charge you for bug fixes by
relabling Win98 (which was Win95 relabled) as WinME).
The only things that have caused some slowdowns are:
1) The restore feature which backups certain files at each boot.
Disable if you dont' like it. It does work however, but only gives you a
limited number of re-dos before you can't re-restore anymore.
2) The fancy 3D menus, icons, and animation effects. Even with all of these
turned off, it still runs sluggishly (IMO) vs. Win98 - even just opening up the
Explorer on teh c:\windows directory.
In short, if you don't NEED any of the new features of WinME that you CAN'T
already download for Win98 from windowsupdate.microsoft.com (or if you're
running Win95), then DON'T bother with this upgrade. It really doesn't do
anything extra, and in my testing on two systems here at work (brand-new 1Ghz
AMD K7 w/ASUS K7V MB & a AMD K6-2 400Mhz system), there are incompatibities
with even a brand name Soundblaster Live! card that results in complete system
crash and hangs.
THUS, don't expect WinME to cure frequent crashing, incompatible driver
conflicts, etc.
david =)
.. let's see, 100,000,000 gullible upgraders to WinME because they're
clueless * $99 each = a cool $9,900,000,000 in Bill Gates bank account .. hmmm,
and it still crashes, doesn't work with everything, and so forth ..
