So the socket itself does not temporarily connect across the tip and ring as
you insert it? I mean the shaft into which you plug the plug... Not the
switching circuit inside some phone jacks...

Looking at it I would be convinced it does as you plug it in.

And you have looked at the DC coming out of your cigarette lighter with a
scope as you start the car? Cigarette lighter sockets are usually connected
all the time. However, the "accessory" or "radio" contacts specifically
disconect the device during crank. If they want to protect a car radio so
much that they would go to the trouble to make a circuit that is hot during
"run" but dead during "crank" why not use an adapter that filters and
protect the Libretto?

BTW they are switching inverters that take 8-14v in and put out 15.00000
that the laptop wants. Some models put out 17v for Compaqs for example...
