The conductors on the plug end will DEFINTELY short on insertion.
The jack end may, or may not, depending on construction.
I've seen phone plugs used as power connectors, and the offenders should be
beaten with a delrin rod.

The L is happy at 17V, I did some tests way back. If you're paranoid,
install a pair of series diodes.
Compaq Junque is pretty cheap at hamfests. :)
