Dear David et al,
it works!
All I had to do was remove and reinstall the card drivers (twice
automatically and once manually) and now it all works... 100MBps! LAN....
I still have the weird non-functioning "PCI communication device" in Device
Manager, but I found a reference to that being "normal" on
http://support.toshiba-tro.de/internet/info/newslett/tr180199.htm and a way
of editing the registry to get rid of it.... who knows ... it's Windows
after all....
