Subject: The never ending story: Hibernation and the correct partitioning
Hi!
I followed the discussion about the correct partioning of the disk. And I
tried to get information from Toshiba-support. I gave the following question
to Toshiba, on their hotline and via mail. In both cases the answer was
definately wrong!
Q: How do I have to partition a new, blank disk on a Libretto 110 to allow
correct hibernation?
A: Format C: with FAT16, then it works.
No more comments neccessary...
Unfortunately I do not have orginal recovery medias, so I cannot check,
whether the orginal recovery procedure creates the neccessary free space on
the end of the disk.
But I have checked a downloadable recovery-floppy: It does partitioning, but
in a simple way: the whole disk is filled with 2GB partitions until the end.
Dependent on the disk size, the last partition may be smaller. But there is
no space left for hibernating. Searching through documents, FAQ's and
downloadable software from Toshiba I did not find ANY hint, that a
Libretto-disk should contain any empy space for hibernating! It seems, that
Toshiba ignores this fact, or at least keeps it very secret!
By experiment I found out some facts: Hibernation my be controled by BIOS or
operating system. Hibernation by BIOS shows a Libretto-icon, an arrow and a
disk-icon on the screen, where the content of the icon-screen disappears
slowly while RAM is written to disk. This hibernation is even available from
DOS! Win98 is able to force BIOS-hibernation.
Win2k has an own implementation with an own screen during hibernation and an
own file on the system-disk. But having installed Win2k, it is still
possible to force a BIOS-hibernation: by configuring the power button for
hibernation, booting DOS and pressing the power-button.
I can't imagine that a "normal" user is able to calculate sectors and
cylinders and make experiments with disk-editors...
So let's assume a "standard" Lib 110, with a new, blank disk, no extras, no
unsupported operating system. How should I partition it correct? Are there
any tools, or recommendations from Toshiba available? Is correct
partitioning done with the orginal recovery medias?
