Decided to see how rusty my Win skills had become... ;) This document describes how to load Windows ME onto a new/blank hard disk installed in a Toshiba Libretto 50CT. Reasons to do this vary, OS "upgrades" on machines usually fail, most of the Libretto 50CT drivers for Windows 95 are not compatible with Windows ME; get the base system running first. It's wise to start fresh when you install any new operating system anyway. Performance is acceptable only of you have at least 32MB of RAM, and it's a good idea to disable the active desktop. This procedure requires the Libretto mini-dock w/PCMCIA slot. The Libretto diskette drive should be connected to the computer, your network card or CD-ROM should be connected to the mini-dock. If you don't have the mini-dock, read through this entire procedure- copy the entire Windows ME CD to your hard disk under \WINME and your entire Windows 98 CD to your hard disk under \WIN98. Then hack accordingly. � Create a Windows 98 bootable DOS boot diskette that contains drivers for a PCMCIA CD-ROM or establishes a network connection to a CD-ROM. � Boot your diskette. Create a FAT32 partition at least 800 MB in size, or use the entire hard disk. Make sure you "format c: /s" to make your fresh hard drive bootable. Test this before continuing. � Boot your diskette, access the Windows ME CD and run "setup /nm /is". The /nm prevents setup from halting because your CPU is slower then 150 MHz or you have less then 32 MB of RAM. The /is command prevents Scandisk from running. � Windows ME will load without errors on the Libretto 50CT. (If you are loading the upgrade edition you'll need a Windows 98 CD to prove you own Windows. If this CD fails, don't worry- this is a Windows ME setup program problem. Input X:\WIN98 where X is the drive letter where \WIN98 can be found and the installation will proceed.) � Reboot with your boot diskette, make a working directory and copy the contents of the CT65555 video driver diskette and the Toshiba Utilities diskette into that directory. � Pop out your boot diskette, reboot into Windows ME � Do NOT load the Toshiba Utilities or Applications, your machine will lock up on reboot and recovery from this is very tough. � The machine will boot and complain about the video driver- don't let Windows search for it, specify the location of the video driver as the working directory you created earlier. Windows ME will install the CT65555 driver and the system will reboot. (you can use the video driver that came with your Libretto or go to the Intel site for a newer Windows 98 version - both work) � Go to "My Computer", right click properties. You'll see the YE-Data device (the unrecognized Libretto floppy drive) - click on this, and then click on reinstall driver. Browse to the directory where you have copied the contents of the CT65555 and Toshiba Utilities diskette and press OK. It will install the W95 Libretto FDD driver (which works), and you should thereafter be able to access the floppy drive. � Back up your Libretto 50CT. Use a program like ghost, or some other tool capable of copying your entire hard disk partition off the system. (burn it to a CD, store it on a Linux server or some other item you can get at from your boot diskette) At this point you can load applications to your hearts content and if (or when) Windows becomes unstable you can simply restore the hard disk partition and avoid the entire process of manually reloading your 50CT. You now have Windows ME fully functional on the Toshiba Libretto 50CT. But what about the cool Toshiba power management utilities that came with the Libretto. Go to the Toshiba web site (http://www.toshiba.com) and look under "Support" and "Downloads." The Power Saver program for the Tecra (Win98) works, and the newest programs for the latest Satellite Pro 4260DVD will also work on your Libretto 50CT.
