Date: Tue, 5 Dec 2000 12:59:10 +0700 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: FUBAR 2 - the sequel - The Cache Writes Back I'm posting this message as a bit of background to several requests (see subsequent messages) I'm making for advice and suggestions... hope it all makes sense, and sincere TIA to anyone who can help - cheers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- A couple of months ago the OE drive in my Libretto expired while under warranty - sincere thanks to everyone on the list who read/replied to my questions at that time. It took three weeks and far too many telephone calls to get a copy receipt from Houston Crest in Hong Kong - they were very, very helpful when I wanted to buy my L110 plus extra memory, Xircom LAN/modem card, Targus lock, case, modem shield, etc... but about as useful as a chocolate teapot when it came to very basic after-sales help (ie sending a single fax or e-mail). TeleDynamics in Kuala Lumpur had been super-helpful when I previously visited them so armed with my hard-won copy receipt I decided to return to Malaysia to take them up on their generous offer of replacing the HDD FOC *and* letting me take my old drive away so that I could attempt to retrieve my data at a later date (I'm backpacking around south-east Asia with a backup policy of accepting that not having any backup facility has to be considered an acceptable risk in the circumstances). The alternative would have been to have bought a 20Gb IBM drive in Singapore where the price was almost too good to be true, but as TeleDynamics repeatedly promised and confirmed I could have my old drive back, and insistent that anything over 6.4Gb would be incompatible with the L110... Arrived at TeleDynamics, handed over my Libretto... ...ten minutes later I'm being told I can't have my old drive back after all, as previously promised. &%$#@!!! Four hours after that I'm leaving with the new HDD installed, trying not to think about the lost data, and very happy to have a fully functional Libretto again. Couldn't last, could it? ;-) I now seem to be plagued with problems which are, individually, appear unrelated - but several (or maybe all) of which might be caused by the work done by TeleDynamics. And, of course, I'm no longer in Malaysia... Anyway, having come this far I'm not quite ready to give up just yet - after all, for all I know this is the only Libretto to have made the summit of Uluru (Ayers Rock). If I could just get it into as stable a configuration as my old Dell P90 was with Win'95OSR2, I'd be a very happy bunny indeed, especially as I'm a world apart from all my 'resources' in England and, at times, a very long way from even the simple things, like telephones - let alone Internet access! TIA if you're able to help, thanks anyway for reading even if you can't, and thanks for your patience no matter what.
