Subject: FUBAR 2 - L110 FDD write hangs everything problem

Subsequent to having my HDD replaced under warranty, I'm experiencing a new
problem with my L110 floppy drive (never had a problems of any kind with it
before).

Basically, it's an intermittent (I'd guesstimate the success-hang rate of
occurrence is about 60%-40%) problem when writing to a floppy - the file is
written or partially written, I hear the floppy drive stop, the FDD light
goes out, but Win'98 continues to show the hourglass pointer and hangs such
that Ctrl+Alt+Del does not function and I have to depress the on/off button
in the lid for several seconds to switch off then re-boot. It's always
terminal; waiting never helps.

Looking at the floppy afterwards, the last file copied is always there, but
most times (not always) it's corrupt (presumably incomplete).
Never any problems when reading - only *sometimes* when writing.
Seems to make no difference if I write one file or several.
Seems to make no difference if I use the top slot or the lower slot.
Seems to make no difference if I boot with the floppy drive PC-card already
in place, or if I hook it up later.
Bought two new floppies; tried standing on one leg, putting my hands in my
pockets, etc - exactly the same problem.

Any suggestions?

AFAIK this problem is related in some way to the HDD replacement and
subsequent rebuilding of the system - the problem was there the first time I
attempted to use the FDD after the warranty work, but I presumed it was a
media problem - it was a couple of weeks later when I tried again with new
floppies that it became apparent that media was not the cause.

I've noticed small differences in Win'98 since TeleDynamics replaced my HDD
under warranty (for example DeFrag now starts with an "Intel Application
Launch Accelerator" message which it didn't previously) so I have wondered
if this problem could be related to the recovery CD they used (mine was on
the wrong land mass at the time).
