Virus scanners are one of those things that will only protect you against
old, known viruses. they're of no help at all against new viruses that have
been programmed to bypass the current scanner updates. Think of them like FLU
shots - they'll probably catch all of the old bugs, but if you've got a new
strain, you'll get infected.
You should update the virus scanners at least weekly to stay current -
however, it will be rather interesting to see when the first back-door attach
will occur (one where they take over the domain of the virus scanner companies
and inject a virus into your virus scanner through the updates directly!).
Of course, simply using a low-access priority account on a Unix/Linux OS or
using a mail reader that isn't vunerable to the current crop of 'windows' happy
viruses will eliminate those concerns completely. (eg. no root access +
extremely limited file access account with everything locked down; eg. Opera
web browser/mail reader; Lynx mail reader; etc.)
And when you do get those nasty viruses on your PC, the requisite CD-R
backup of your entire HD will eliminate them in a few minutes w/o any further
hassles upon a full restore.
Of course, besides the Love & Melissa viruses, it may very well be that the
majority of these 'new' viruses virus companies say they've detected are all
part of a majestic PR thing to scare people into believing there are truck
loads of viruses out there, thus making them eager to shell out $$ for a virus
scanner (which won't work at all against any new strains of viruses - hmmmm....
- and which is why they always release updates to catch new viruses AFTER
they've infected your PC ;).
