Subject: Re: Off topic: BIOS boot problems
A dying battery may cause these problems. If the unit is not connected for
some time, it may discharge the battery enough to prevent it from having enough
current to let the machine boot properly. After it's been on long enough, it
may charge up just enough due to the power being on to hold sufficient charge
to properly go through a full boot afterwards.
But you may have some intermittent connection inside the machine, or possible
component failure.
You can dig up the exploded parts view and my overclocking article on my site
and see if disassemblying the baby and making sure every connector is secure
will help -- maybe also make sure there's a thin layer of thermal grease on the
CPU to ensure proper heatsink contact just in case that odd possibility is
causing the problem.
Make sure the contacts are clean (alcohol or rubber eraser) and seated
securely.
Also check for any possible signs of looseness in the RAM chips on the MB if
you've had a 9.5mm HD installed as a 3rd party upgrade - some have noticed that
the RAM chips delaminated due to the extra thickness. Remove the plastic foam
spacers around the HD bay to prevent this future problem (under the black
plastic HD sheeting).
Beyond that?...
