Subject: RE: External HDD / USB question
Is anyone out there using an external HDD?
I am
With Win'98 and/or Win'2K?
Win2k
Hints / tips / recommendations much appreciated!
About a year ago when I was on the market for such a solution I placed a web
page http://pcmcia2ide.da.ru It is probably outdated now but there are still
some hints.
If I want to hook up said external drive to my L110, am I right to say
that via a PC-card slot is the only sensible option? (I don't have the dock
with USB).
Parallel port version is also available. You can purchase CardBus either USB
or Firewire and then hook 36pin IDE adapter *expensive*.
Also, am I right to presume that as the L110 has CardBus, I have a
choice between the PC-card being a dedicated external HDD card, or using a
USB
card?
Moreover you have choice between Cardbus (faster) and 16bit (available in
DOS). From Addonics and Skymaster respectively.
Any disadvantage with the USB option?
Actually two: slow and unavailable in DOS.
I can see USB might be useful for other things in the future (actually I
guess I'd buy a USB mouse at the
same time and stop carrying the replicator everywhere).
I would seek for Firewire solution - I also consider buying external 5.25''
case for combo Ricoh 9120A DVD&CDRW.
Will either or both (proprietry/USB) options power an external 2.5" x9.5mm
without needing an external power supply?
Most of them use PS/2 5volts but PCMCIA alimented also exist.
I remember reading that someone on the list was using an external HDD
but that the software was crap, so any recommendations for a good piece of
kit would be very much appreciated - likewise which USB cards are to be
preferred/avoided - TIA
Do not know any except EZ-Drive proprietary soft will not work. I am quite
happy with DN-Boy however it should be noted that their DOS driver only
accepts partitions less than 2GB formatted FAT 16. That is enough for a
ghost image.
Hope this helps,
Alexandre Kaoukhov
