OH! Richard....
I went through this whole 'sound in DOS' problem too, and the answer was
embarassingly simple. Perhaps this will work for you. I'd loaded a new OS
(W98, but I think the problem would have been the same if I reloaded W95),
and had no sound in DOS afterwards.
We went back and forth here on the list for a couple of weeks, having a
couple different sides of the issue being put forward... one as I recall was
that all you needed was a "Set Blaster=XXXXXXX" in your autoexec.bat, and
that no DOS drivers were really needed for the 50CT to get sound in DOS.
Well that last argument didn't hold water. I remembered at one point that I
never bothered to load the sound drivers that came with the Libretto, and
that Toshiba has posted at their website on their support pages. When I
booted W98 after loading it, THERE WAS SOUND! That little Windows 'jingle'
merrily greated me with the Windows tips window [ hmmm.... ;-) ], and I
thought no more about sound drivers.
Heh... well I finally remembered I hadn't loaded the 50CTs sound drivers, so
I downloaded them from the Toshiba site, loaded them, and VOILA! Sound in
DOS!
So if you've recently installed a new OS, this could very well be your
problem. If not... hey... give us some more info, and someone will probbaly
come up with a fix for you. I'd be interested in any DOS MP3 program you
might find... but you're not going to be able to multi-task in Windows with
a DOS program running anyway... right?
Ciao,
Matt
