You need a PCMCIA card and an access point. Forget the word "cheap" - it is
expensive!
Beside Siemens and Lucent there are some other brands available, e.g. 3Com,
... and some no-names. Make sure you look for 802.11b and wi-fi equipment,
it is the current standard.

According to my experience you must spent at least the double of the
mentioned prices!

You can connect the access point via a hub to your wired network. Some
access points additionally include ISDN-connections and basic network
services, like a DHCP server or NAT. This devices may work standalone as
internet-gateway.
All of the access points need management. Once it is running, you can do it
from any PC in your network, but for installation purpose it is a good idea
to use a wired connection (It is hard to use the wireless conection to set
up the wireless connection...)
Linux should not be a problem. At least Lucent provides driver software for
linux.
