Subject: Got my pc card working

I would like to thank all of youse guys and gals for helping me
on my Ethernet card installation. I think it was Clifford that
gave me the tip on installing the Win95 28 floppy set on my
libretto that got me over the hump. Many others gave very
helpful hints but that thread was so long I can't remember all
of their names.

The basic problem that I was having was that I couldn't figure
out how to get a complete driver install for my SMC8040 ethernet
card. Going halfway through the install and fail meant crashing
during the following reboot and having to format the disk. I hadn't
the slightest idea of how do use SysEdit to repair the system files.

Yesterday I timed myself formatting the disk, installing the system,
setting up the 28 disk set on the hd, and reinstalling some of the
software. It took 4 hours. I think I went through this process about
6 times in the last week - very painful.

The real cause of most of my problems (other than my own ignorance)
was that the pc card and floppy needed to occupy the same pc card slot.

So I couldn't access the Win95 disk set which busted the install.
Or I thought it locked up when it was going through these 5 minute
delays trying to find the FDD when the ethernet card was in there.
I later learned that it is much better to wait five minutes for the
Browse window to come up, than to hit the reset button and having
to rebuild the hd all over again.
I also managed to screw up the network setup and had to do the rebuild
all over again after deleting everything in the Network Control panel
and getting the dreaded VxD errors during reboot.

But it is working now, I have my desktop Mac hooked up with my wife's
powerbook and my Libby at the side.

You want to know why I started this in the first place? I'm sure you
do because if you've read this far you obviously have nothing better
to do. I have set my Libretto up as an MP3 player for my motorcycle
in addition to it's GPS role. I was recording my old phonographs on
my mac system and creating these 20 megabyte files for each side of
the record. For those of you under 40, these are round flat plastic
things that music used to play music. There's this needle thing that
sort of vibrates, and, well, just because I don't understand it doesn't
mean it doesn't work.

Sorry, got off the track there. Well, I was transferring these 20 MB
files via floppy disk. A program called MacGZip could produce segmented
files so I could use my FloppyNet to communicate between the computers.
I have found that ethernet works much better. It took me about a half
hour just to do one file. Now it takes less than one minute.

Life is good once again.

This group is cool.
